Fish Fry

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual fish fry each Friday evening during lent ... (The first fish fry on Feb. 26 was cancelled due to the weather) … March 5th – March 26th at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Elkins.  Dinner includes fish, fries, coleslaw, bread and drink for just $7.00.   The fish fry is scheduled in the parish hall from 4:30 to 7:00 pm, and you may eat in or get it to go.  The public is invited. 

Red Cross Blood Donations

Officials of the Greater Alleghenies Region of American Red Cross Blood Services have raised concerns related to the impact of recent weather patterns seen across the country on the area’s blood supply. “These winter storms have resulted in the loss of approximately one-third of the potential collections.” Currently, there is less than a day’s supply of O negative and B negative blood types, and less than a two-day supply of A negative.  For blood donation opportunities in your community, to schedule an appointment to donate or to check on the status of a blood drive near you, please call 1-800 GIVE LIFE or visit RedCrossBlood.org

Glenville State College Percussion Ensemble Concert

The 30th Glenville State College Percussion Ensemble Concert will be March 25th and 26th in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The GSC Fine Arts Department is taking song requests of past performances from the community, alumni, students, faculty and staff.  GSC student tickets cost $5.00 for the March 26th performance but are free for the March 25th show. The price of tickets will be $7.00 for other students and $10.00 for general admission. Harlem Globetrotters at Wesleyan

The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters will return to West Virginia Wesleyan’s John D. Rockefeller IV Physical Education Center on Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m.  “The Ambassadors of Good Will” will battle their long-time nemesis, the Washington Generals.   Tickets are $30 for lower level and $23 for upper level seats.  All seats are “bleacher style” and on a first-come, first seated basis.  Proceeds from the Globetrotters appearance will benefit the West Virginia Wesleyan Department of Athletics. Tickets can be purchased at Sunny Buck’s in Wesleyan’s Benedum Campus Center, at ticketweb.com, or by calling 866-468-7630

2010 “Woodly the Elf” poster contest

The Mountain State Forest Festival is proud to announce the 2010 “Woodly the Elf” poster contest. The contest has been the means of selecting the yearly Forest Festival mascot since 1977. The contest is open to all individual 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in Randolph County. The students may attend public or private schools or be home schooled. Dr. Phares, Superintendent of Randolph County Schools, has given permission for the contest to bheld.  Entry forms were delivered to the Board of Education Office for distribution to school offices. Posters must be the work of the child and should feature “Woodly the Elf” participating in the festival. The other rules pertaining to the contest are; no photos may be used that would identify the child in any way, poster must be on a 22 X 28 poster board, each child must write on the back of their poster – I have completed this poster by myself and sign their name. A permission form must also be signed by the parent giving the child permission to participate with the Minor Court of Queen Silvia LXXIV if they are selected as the winner.  All entries are due to school offices on March 12, 2010, festival officials will pick-up posters that day from each school. No late entries will be accepted. Judging will be held later in March by three judges, the decision of the judges is final. The judges will choose one winner who will serve as “Woodly the Elf” 2010 and four runner-ups who will be invited to ride in the Grand Feature Parade with the winner.  The Mountain State Forest Festival invites all Randolph County children in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades to participate in this contest. Camp Counselors Needed

College students looking to put their skills to good use will want to check out YMCA Camp Horseshoe.  Horseshoe summer camp counselors are needed to make a difference in the lives of campers  Horseshoe’s summer season includes nationally recognized teen civic leadership and entrepreneurship camps, adventure camp for 7 – 12 year olds and Youth Opportunity Camps for low income boys and girls.  Summer residential staff enhances their work experience as they use their talents to help teens and children.  Summer positions provide a stipend, an AmeriCorps Education Award to eligible summer camp counselors, meals and lodging.  For information, call Horseshoe at 304-478-2481, e-mail  horseshoe@hi-y.org or write YMCA Camp Horseshoe at Rt. 2 Box 138, Parsons, WV 26287.

Red Cross Relief to Haiti

The American Red Cross is sending money, supplies and staff to Haiti to support relief efforts there after the earthquake, which caused catastrophic damage and loss of life.  There has been an outpouring of support from the public. To help, people can make an unrestricted donation to the International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). The public can also help by texting “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross, through an effort backed by the U.S. State Department. Funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.     

City Kitty Snaps

Petsmart Charities & the Randolph County Humane Society have teamed up to offer “City Kitty Snaps”, a program to help spay and neuter cats for Elkins city residents who meet the income guidelines.  To see if you qualify call Kelly at the animal shelter at 636-7844 or Faye at 636-6367.  The goal is to reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens in the Elkins area and provide a “forever” home for each and every cat.

Rock Cave Senior Citizens

Upshur County Senior Center has a satellite program for senior citizens in the Rock Cave area.  The Third Thursday of each month a covered dish luncheon will be held from 11:30am to 1:00pm at the Banks District VFD at Rock Cave.  The senior center will provide covered dishes and we ask that all seniors 60+ bring a covered dish to share.  For more information call 304-472-0528

FREE MEAL

Local churches have organized to serve a free meal each Saturday from 11AM - 1PM at Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, 113 First Street. No questions asked, no income guidelines.

Lewis County Senior Transportation

Lewis County residents who are 60 years of age or older… Do you need transportation to medical appointments, to the grocery store or to a senior nutrition site?  Call the Senior Center at 269 - 5738, talk to Gary Wiant or Dinah Mills.

CERT team meetings

Attention all CERT and Teen CERT members, also non-members wanting to join the CERT team.  There is a meeting the second Thursday of every month at the County Commission meeting room at 7:00pm.  For information call Glenn or Judy Koon at 304-338-0867.

Alanon family group

Alanon family group meets every Tuesday at 8pm… Anonymous support group free for anyone affected by another’s drinking problem.  Upstairs at the Grace Episcopal Church in Elkins (not affiliated with the church)
